Mainspring is an ongoing live action freeform, which runs from 2pm to 5pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month at the ANU in Canberra. It is set in a world which is part pulp and part steampunk. It has Mad Science, allowing for fantastic devices such as Clockwork Automaton, steam-powered Clanks, Lightning guns, Frankenstein style creations and many more. In the high northern snows dinosaurs roam, while Zeppelins and Ornithopters fight for the skys in the south. Characters can be from one of 4 races human, Galetean(organic construct), Automaton or Clank. They can be associated with the Military, the University or the Nobility. They can come from either country; Guilder or Florin. Several months ago the city of Mainspring was ceded to Guilder as part of the peace treaty which suddenly ended the recent bitter war between the two countries.

Winter has settled over the city of Mainspring. Snow and ice are thick on the streets, shaded grey with soot from the steel refineries. Bright banner covered with the old runes fly above the houses as part of the celebrations of the midwinter equinox. The celebration was once a runic ritual to ensure a bountiful year, and is now mostly a popular feast, often with fireworks.

In the Ducal Palace Nathaniel Delacourte` settles into his role as interim governor of Mainspring, and the people are happy to have a Florin noble in charge once again.

In the hallowed halls of academia the university students are celebrating finishing their mid-year exams, but not yet knowing the results. The lecturers and Department heads are buried under marking and must hand in their accounts and claims for next years budget as well as make submissions to fund special projects.

The City watch are busy with investigating several murders last month and dealing with the biannual influx of prospectors wandering in to enjoy the feast and restock their winter supplies.
